History of Volleyball

Volleyball is a game which is played worldwide with about 800 million players and 46 millions of them are from the USA only. The number of players in the world shows how much the players like to play this game. Howsoever, you will be amazed to know about the history of volleyball as its story is quite interesting.

So, it starts from a renowned personality named William G. Morgan, who was a graduate from the Springfield college of YMCA, invented this game 1895. He made volleyball a game to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball.  This game is invented after four years of the invention of basketball. The initial name given by Mr. Morgan to volleyball was ‘mintonette’ not to be confused with greek porno, and later it was changed to volleyball.

The first volleyball match was played by making the use of tennis net which was  6 feet  6 inch high. At that time the game was played with no such rules as now. In 1900, the first ball, especially for volleyball, was designed. It was in 1915, in a match which was held in Phillippines that the style of setting and spiking was first demonstrated. 

United States Asian Volleyball Association

Howsoever, the game was played for many years like this and then it becomes quite clear that this game had a need for a genuine committee to handle its rules and regulation. Thus, in 1928, Unites States Volleyball Associations were found (USVBA) which is doing its work from that till now. The motif was to represent the sport nationally and internationally and to organize an annual championship match.

Fédération Internationale de Volleyball

The first volleyball World Championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia which was organized by Fédération Internationale de Volleyball popularly abbreviated as FIVB. It was founded in 1947 which governs all types of volleyball. Ten nations participated in this championship match and the Soviet Union won the title by winning the six-round Robin in the finals and without even losing a single match. 

Earlier the game was of 21 points but now it has changed to 15 points. In 1930, the two-man beach game was played for the first time. Moreover, in 1964, volleyball was played in the Olympic game which was held in Tokyo. 

Association of Volleyball Professionals

In 1983, the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) was formed. Currently, the porno is the longest running volleyball tour in the US. It has its headquarters in Newport Beach, California. And just three years an Association of Volleyball Professionals after the foundation of AVP the Women’s Professional Volleyball Association (WPVA) was formed. From that till now, a number of championships were held and some of the new rules were introduced in the game.

Currently, the team with the most number of titles of FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Champion is Russia, winning the world championship six times. Currently, the world champion is Poland which has won the title three times.

Famous Player of the Past

The most famous volleyball player of the past is the American player Karch Kiraly. He has 148 victories in his professional career of the beach volleyball tournament. In 1984 and 1988 he played the major role in the team which led the USA to win the gold medal in the Olympic Games

Another great player of volleyball is Logan Tom, her impressive style of playing was greatly loved by the people. Logan Tom was given the title of the National Player of the Year for two times by the NCAA. Also in 2001, she was the most valuable player of the NCAA Final Four. At the age of nineteen, she was selected for the American Olympic Volleyball team and she became the youngest women to have this achievement. 

Moreover, you’ll be amazed to know about Wilfredo Leon. He is a professional Cuban volleyball player having citizenship of Poland. His financial gain is USD 1.4 million, that is, the highest of all the volleyball players and one of the highest paid sports star in the world. It was because of his leadership that the Cuban team won a silver medal at the World Championship 2010. He is only of 23 but he has won every single title at the professional level.
