All aboard
China, which dominates the medal standings, will feature 845 athletes in table tennis, women’s volleyball and basketball. A place on the 64-month rankings will bolster China’s table tennis squad. The 20-year-old, who topped Korea’s points to table at the Asian table tennis championships in Hong Kong last year, is one of Asia’s most promising young players and a potential gold medalist at the Olympics.
The Indian men’s volleyball team, led by veteran Gurudev Singh, won bronze at the Asian Men’s Volleyball Championships in Hong Kong last year. It is the first time it has been played in this edition. It is India’s first appearance at a major international event since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The national team was recently active at the 30th South East Asian Games in the country. The men’s indoor team won a historic silver medal.
The men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams took bronze. Indian volleyball teams eventually defeated powerhouse Japan, aided by Jimmy George’s tremendous momentum. Still, they were brought back to earth by the home side from the south, who later recorded a victory. Despite finishing second in the Asian men’s volleyball championships in Hong Kong last year, Japan had to settle for silver because of its unbeaten run. Despite qualifying for the 2010 Asian Games, the women have not made much difference, failing to have a medal chance in every edition they have played since.
Indian volleyball teams have started the Asian Games. This time they began with three straight sets, all of which were straight-sets wins. All these factors have worked well together, and they have beaten Hong Kong, and the Philippines in three consecutive sets. They couldn’t get past volleyball heavyweights Iran and Japan, despite winning in sets each.

Asia’s participation
India’s volleyball team has enjoyed a revival in recent years. Having finished seventh in 1978 and missed out on a medal and ended up fourth place. The following years had several ups and downs, as they came forth and fifth in the 1970 edition. They did not reach, but reached seventh place in 1978. In the 1990s, they dominated the South Asian Games, winning three medals and sparking a revival. After a below-par performance at the 2002 and 2006 Asian Games. The men’s indoor teams took silver. The two beach volleyball teams won bronze, the Philippines struggled for medals with four.
The number of nations participating in volleyball tournaments is steadily increasing. The game still has a considerable deficit compared to other sports such as basketball, baseball, football, and even tennis. Although ranking does not allow them to compete in World Cups, not many have played the sport, contributing to their being out of international tournaments in the early years. Indian volleyball players are expected to travel and play in other leagues, which has affected the quality of their education. A factor that coach GE Sridharan sees is the team’s poor performances at the South Asian Games in recent years and its subpar performances in international competitions.
At the time of writing, the World Volleyball Championships are being held in Italy and Bulgaria. Still, there is no live coverage of these events in much of Asia. In East Asia, especially China and Japan, volleyball events cannot match the popularity of the NBA in generating interest compared to other sports such as basketball, baseball, football, and even tennis.
