The Hague, Netherlands, August 29, 2010 - For the 10th-time on the 2010 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, a team from United States has topped an international Beach Volleyball podium as Casey Jennings and Kevin Wong validated an earlier victory in the US$380,000 Milner Open to win the gold medal here Sunday.
Competing together for only the second-time on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour, the 21st-seeded Jennings and Wong scored a 21-18, 18-21 and 17-15 win in 60 minutes over the eighth-seeded Benjamin Insfran and Bruno Oscar Schmidt to win the season's final men's event on the 2010 international calendar to claim the $30,000 first-place prize.
The first nine American titles in 2010 were captured by SWATCH FIVB World Tour champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, who set a record for international gold medal finishes by men's and women's teams in a season. The reigning Olympic champions, Dalhausser and Rogers won four Grand Slam titles (Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Poland) and "open" crowns in Brazil, Poland, the Czech Republic, Norway (Kristiansand) and Finland.
With the win, the soon-to-be 38-year old Wong (September 12) became the fourth oldest player to win a men's SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal in the 24-year history of the international circuit to rank behind Brazilian rival Franco Neto (40 years, eight months, 11 days), American Mike Dodd (two "old-time" wins at 39, 2, 7 and 38, 11, 29) and German Andreas Scheuerpflug (38, 0, 25).
Wong, a fifth-place finisher at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games with Rob Heidger, also captured his third SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal with the first two being with Stein Metzger at 2001 and 2002 stops in Switzerland (Gstaad) and Portugal (Espinho). Wong's last international finale was with Metzger at the 2003 Austrian Grand Slam in Klagenfurt.
For Jennings, his household has 39 FIVB gold medals as his wife (Kerri Walsh) collected 38 SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medals with Misty May-Treanor as the pair teamed for three world championships and two Olympic titles during their eight-season international Beach Volleyball career. Prior to this season, Jennings' best finish was a second at a 2009 Polish Open stop in Myslowice with Matt Fuerbringer.
Despite losing their final qualifying Wednesday to face possible elimination from the Milner Open, Jennings and Wong earned a Main Draw berth via a "lucky loser" draw after the late withdrawals of teams from Latvia and New Zealand after the start of the men's competition.
Prior to Jennings and Wong's semi-final appearance Saturday, only two teams had advanced to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour "final four" after earning "lucky loser" Main Draw berths. Murilo Toscano and Thomas Klepper accomplished the feat first at a 2001 event where the Brazilians placed fourth in Vitória, Brazil. Germans Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif took advantage of a 2008 "lucky loser berth in Bahrain to place third in the Manama event.
Benjamin and Bruno, who dropped a 27-29, 21-18 and 15-12 decision to the American winners Friday, split the $21,000 second-place prize in posting their best SWATCH FIVB World Tour finish together in 2010. At the season-opening event in Brasilia, Benjamin and Bruno captured the bronze medal in their first international event together.
Sunday's win was the seventh-straight SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal victory by an American men's pair over a Brazilian team to tie the international series between the two countries at 24-24. Due to the efforts of reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, the Americans had won the previous six meetings over the South Americans with five being posted this season.
In the bronze medal match, top-seeded Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena secured the third American podium placement at the Milner Open by defeating 10th-seeded Emiel Boersma and Daan Spijkers of The Netherlands 21-19, 15-21 and 15-8 in 56 minutes. While the Dutch split $11,200 for playing in their first SWATCH FIVB World Tour, Fuerbringer and Lucena shared $15,000 for claiming their second medal this season after placing second to Dalhausser and Rogers at the Austrian Grand Slam. |
