Haikou, China, December 24, 2009 – The 2009 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship produced the top 16 teams apiece for both men's and women's categories with all the pool matches concluded here on Thursday.
As only 22 men's teams and 21 women's pairs are competing in the annual championship, the second competition day wounded up the men's last 10 pool matches and women's last eight pool matches.
In the men's section, Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro/Suratna of Indonesia, and Prathip Sukto/Sittichai Sangkachot of Thailand booked the last berths for the round of 16 as both of them played two matches each, all winning in straight sets.
Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro/Suratna downed Jadideh Azim/Sansabali Ebrahim of Iran 21-16, 21-14, before winning over Al-Jabri Khalifa/Al-Subahi Bader of Oman 21-12, 21-19 to top Pool G.
And Pool H was won by Prathip Sukto/Sittichai Sangkachot who bettered over Raoufi Rahman/Assari Naeini Reza of Iran 21-18, 21-18, and out-powered Shinpei Aoki/Yujiro Hidaka of Japan 21-16, 21-18.
In other six men's matches of the day, all winners triumphed over their respective rivals in two straight sets, including the three pairs from the hosts.
Xu Linyin/Wu Penggen beat Ekanayaka Pubudu/Silva Dhammika of Sri Lanka 21-14, 21-12, Gao Peng/Li Jian muscled over Kasi Viswanatha Raju/Kiran Kumar Reddy of India 21-16, 21-9 and Liu Yong/Chen Cheng downed Gabriel Ingkagan Usman/Angelo Confesor Espiritu, Philippines 21-13, 21-14.
Kentaro Asahi/Katsuhiro Shiratori of Japan overcame Kittipat Yungtin/Sataporn Sawangrueng of Thailand 22-20, 21-10, Alexandr Dyachenko/Alexey Sidorenko of Kazakhstan sailed over Peiris Sampath/Rathnapala Wasantha of Sri Lanka 21-15, 21-12, and their compatriots Alexey Kulinich/Dmitriy Yakovlev also had an easy win over Wong Kwun Pong/Wong Chun Wai of Chinese Hong Kong 21-16, 21-9.
In the women's action of the day, Zhang Changning/Ji Linjun of China survived a full-set match to beat Gunasinghe Thakshila/Gunawardana Geethika of Sri Lanka 2-1 (21-19, 21-23, 16-14), which was also the only match to be decided on the final set.
Their fellow Chinese Xue Chen/Zhang Xi won over Do Thi Hau/Ngo Vo Thanh Loan of Vietnam 21-10, 21-12, and Jin Jieqiong/Yue Yuan defeated another Vietnamese pair Truong Thi Yen/Nguyen Thi Mai 21-18, 21-5.
Japan's two pairs also recorded their respective victories as Shinako Tanaka/Sayaka Mizoe beat Sewwandi Tharanga/Sujeewa, W.W. of Sri Lanka 21-10, 21-8, and Mutsumi Ozaki/Ayumi Kusano stamped Yokbeth Manisala Kapasiang/Efa Sri Susilowati of Indonesia 21-17, 21-14.
Thailand also had two victories from Yupa Phokongploy/Kamoltip Kulna who nipped Jusabelle Berame Brillo/Nerissa Desaporado Bautista of the Philippines 21-17, 21-12, and from Usa Tenpaksee/Jjarunee Sannok who stunned Mashkova Tatyana/Tsimbalova Irina of Kazakhstan 21-17, 21-16.
However, Kazakhstan also had something for celebration as Samalikova Bakhtygul/Pilipenko Marina defeated Beh Shun Thing/Luk Teck Hua of Malaysia 21-18, 21-16. |
