Songkhla, Thailand, April 15, april -- Fired-up Yue Yuan and Zhang Dan will challenge Lu Wenfeng and Ren Zhengqing in an all-Chinese women's semi-final clash in the on-going 10th Samila-Federbrau Asian Beach Volleyball Tour at Samila Beach here on Thursday.
The hard-attacking Yue and Zhang from China 1, fresh from winning the last week's 7th Phatthalung-Loma Asian Beach Volleyball Tour in Phatthalung, continued their invincible form on Wednesday with two straight wins.
After outclassing Indonesia's Fitri Wijayanti and Ayu Cahyaningsiam 21-11 21-13 in the morning second round, the Chinese remain one of the indomitable giants for the other experienced teams to be reckoned with in the top-flight five-day meet. In the afternoon quarter-finals, Yue and Zhang thrashed Australia 2's Louise Bawden and Alice Rohkamper 21-15 21-17 to book a berth for the next round.
In the Thursday semi-finals, the China 1's duo will go up against China 2's Lu and Ren, who stunned Japan 2's Takemi Nishibori and Miwa Asao 21-19 21-12 in the other quarter-final encounter.
Reigning champions and the Asian Beach Games winners Jarunee Sannok and Usa Tenpaksee of Thailand 2 will take on Australia 1's Heike Jensen and Becchara Palmer in the other semi-final clash on Thursday.
Jarunee and Usa pulled off an impressive 21-18 21-12 win over Japan 1's Shinako Tanaka and Hiromi Suzuki in the quarter-finals, while the Australians surprised Thailand's 1 Kamoltip Kulna and Upa Phukrongploy, gold medalists at the 24th South East Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima and former two-time Asian winners, 21-18 21-18 in 39 minutes.
In the men's competition, the Asian Beach Games gold medalists Andy Ardiyansah and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro from Indonesia 1 played a tough match against Zhong Shibo and Ma Jingrong to beat the China 2's duo 21-19 19-21 15-10 in a 54-minute hotly-contested quarter-final tussle on Wednesday.
However, a daunting task awaits the Indonesians in the semi-finals on Thursday when they will go up against Iran 2's Parviz Farrokhi and Agha Mohammad Salagh, who defeated Vietnam 2's Nguyen Trong Quoc and Nguyen Thanh Vinh 21-12 21-19.
The other semi-final match will see China 1's Bao Jian and Jin Weizai take on Kazakhstan 2's Alexandr Babichev and Alexey Kuleshova. Bao and Jin tamed Thailand 3's Ravepon Chamnithurakan and Chaiwat Aroonkul 21-14 21-13 in the quarter-finals, while Babichev and Kuleshova hammered Philippines 1's Rhovyl Verayo and Jonrey Sasing 21-18 21-19 in 44 minutes.
The 5th-8th classification round and the semi-finals will be held in the Thursday morning, while the third-place play-off and the finals will take place from 2pm. |
