Guaruja, Brazil, September 21, 2008 - Brazilians Harley Marques and Pedro Salgado captured their sixth SWATCH FIVB World Tour men’s gold medal this year here Sunday at the US$350,000 KIA Open presented by Banco do Brasil to clinch the season’s point title on the international Beach Volleyball circuit.

The top-seeded Harley and Salgado shared the $28,000 first-place prize by defeating third-seeded Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany 24-26, 21-19 and 15-13 in the 68-minute finale.

The Brazilians maintained their “perfect” record for gold medal matches on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour as Sunday’s title was their ninth international crown since forming their partnership at the start of the 2007 season where Harley and Pedro also won the championship in Shanghai, China.

The 34-year old Harley, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the KIA Open, captured his 12 FIVB gold medal as he claimed his previous three titles with Para Ferreira (2002 Berlin), Franco Neto (2003 Berlin) and Benjamin Insfran (2005 Montreal).

In the KIA Open bronze medal match, second-seeded Jonas Reckermann and Mischa Urbatzka shared the $14,000 third-place prize after posting a 23-21 and 21-13 win in 45 minutes over fifth-seeded Joao Maciel and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil. Maciel and Bruno split $10,500 for fourth-place. It marked the third-time that two German men’s teams were on the same SWATCH FIVB World Tour podium together since 1987.

Vivian Cunha and Larissa Franca won the women’s KIA Open Saturday by defeating Agatha Bednarczuk and Shaylyn Bede 21-13 and 29-27 in the 49-minutes All-Brazilian gold medal match. With four Brazilian women’s teams in the medal round, Shelda Bede and Ana Paula Connelly captured third-place by defeating the Salgado sisters 21-17 and 21-18.
