Beijing, China, August 16, 2008 – Teams from Brazil, Georgia, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia and the United States advanced to the "Elite Eight" in the men's section of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Beach Volleyball Tournament here on Saturday. The pair from China failed to book a ticket in the top eight.
Brazil and the United States will be represented by two teams each in the quarter-finals after wins Saturday. American winners were second-seeded Phil Dalhausser/Todd Rogers and seventh-seeded Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal while third-seeded Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos and Brazil. fourth-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes also advanced for Brazil.
Other "Elite Eight' teams are fifth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor/Richard Schuil of the Netherlands, ninth-seeded David Klemperer/Eric Koreng of Germany, 15th-seeded Renato "Geor" Gomes/Jorge "Gia" Terceiro Georgia and Florian Gosch and Alexander Horst of Australia.
Dalhausser and Rogers defeated 20th-seeded Martin Laciga and Jan Schnider of Switzerland 21-16, 21-23 and 15-13 in 57 minutes while Klemperer and Kloreng eliminated top-seeded Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu of China 21-18 and 21-15 in 42 minutes.
Nummerdor and Schuil defeated 10th-seeded Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack of Australia 21-16 and 21-14 victory in 40 minutes while the Georgians ousted 16th-seeded Clemens Doppler and Peter Gartmayer of Austria 19-21, 21-16 and 15-13 in 58 minutes.
fourth-seeded Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil rebounded from a pool play defeat and advanced to the quarter-finals with a 23-21 and 21-15 win in 47 minutes over 19th-seeded Kentaro Asahi and Katsuhiro Shiratori of Japan.
Gibb and Rosenthal eliminated 12th-seeded Pablo Herrera and Raul Mesa of Spain 26-24 and 21-17 in 55 minutes while Emanuel and Ricardo posted an 18-21, 25-23 and 15-12 win in 63 minutes over ninth-seeded Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky of Russia.
After losing their first two matches in pool play, Gosch and Horst have rebounded with three-straight wins highlighted by Saturday's 21-17 and 21-18 victory in 47 minutes over 23rd-seeded Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs of Latvia.
The "Elite Eight" compete for a spot in the semi-finals Wednesday and the medal matches Friday. |
