Beijing, China, August 11, 2008 - Two days after suffering their first international Beach Volleyball defeat in 22 matches, Americans Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers regained their winning ways here Monday to make their Beijing 2008 Olympic Games pool a four-way tie with one match left for each team Wednesday.
After losing 21-19 and 21-18 win in 48 minutes to 23rd-seeded Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs of Latvia Saturday, the top-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers rebounded with a 21-15 and 21-10 victory in 42 minutes over 11th-seeded Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher of Switzerland in the second of two Pool B matches Monday.
After snapping the American’s 21-match winning streak to deny Dalhausser and Rogers a chance to tie the all-time international mark of 22-straight victories by Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Jose Loiola in 1999, Plavins and Samoilovs could not out-play the veteran team of Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde as the Argentineans posted a 23-21 and 21-19 victory over the Latvians in Monday’s first session in 45 minutes.
“Give the Latvians all the credit for beating us,” said the 34-year old Rogers. “Obviously, we did a lot of things better tonight and were ready to play. Thinking back to our preparations, we should have arrived in Beijing a few days earlier to adjust to the environment. Anyway, we are glad to play a very good match against a very competitive team like the Swiss.”
With all four teams tied at one win each, Wednesday’s Pool B winners will be guaranteed a spot in the elimination rounds begin Friday and Saturday with 16 teams competing. To protect their second seed in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Dalhausser and Rogers must defeat Baracetti and Conde and hope the Swiss defeated Plavins and Samoilovs.
If both the Americans and Latvians win Wednesday, Plavins and Samoilovs will advance as the second-seeded team in the elimination round while Dalhausser and Rogers will learn their first-round opponent via a “draw”. If the Swiss and Argentines win, Heyer and Heuscher will advance as the top team from the pool.
Matches in men’s Pools C and E were also played Monday as the teams of third-seeded Emanuel/Ricardo Santos of Brazil and fifth-seeded Reinder Nummerdor/Richard Schuil of the Netherlands advanced to Wednesday’s final pool play matches with 2-0 marks.
While Emanuel and Ricardo are tied with 10th-seeded Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack of Australia for the Pool C leadership, the Dutch are the out-right leaders in Pool E entering their final match against eighth-seeded David Klemperer and Eric Koreng of Germany. The Germans are tied for second after losing 21-15 and 21-15 Monday to 20th-seeded Martin Laciga and Jan Schnider of Switzerland in 47 minutes.
Emanuel and Ricardo will be playing the Aussies for the second-time in Olympic competition as the Brazilians defeated Schacht and Slack in Athens pool play in 2004 enroute to winning their gold medal at the Greek Summer Games. Despite trailing 7-5 to the Brazilians in the FIVB series between the two teams, Schacht and Slack have won the last two matches with Emanuel and Ricardo. |
