Seoul, Korea, May 14, 2008 -- Led by Mexico's Mayra Garcia and Bibiana Candelas, six Beach Volleyball tandems from outside of the top eight-seeded teams in Wednesday's 33-team the Qualification Tournament for the US$175,000 Seoul Open earned Main Draw berths at this week's SWATCH FIVB World Tour stop on the Han River Jamsil Citizen Park.
The 16th-seeded Garcia and Candelas have been successful in the last two attempts after upsetting the top-seeded Salgado sisters (Carolina and Maria Clara) 21-16, 25-27 and 15-6 Wednesday afternoon.
Two pairs from the Netherlands along with teams from the Czech Republic, the Philippines and Spain bettered their seeds in securing one of the final eight spots in Thursday's opening "money" rounds. The only survivors from the top-ranked teams Wednesday were third-seeded Mika Teru Saiki and Chiaki Kusuhara and fourth-seeded Cristine "Saka" Santanna and Andrezza "Rtvelo" Martins of Georgia.
Other lower-ranked teams advancing to Thursday's play were ninth-seeded Hana Klapalova/Tereza Petrova of the Czech Republic, 10th-seeded Diane Pascua/Heidi Ilustre of the Philippines, 11th-seeded Ester Alcon/Olga Matveeva of Spain, and 12th-seeded Mered de Vries/Sanne Keizer and 18th-seeded Marleen Van Iersel/Maloes Wesselink of the Netherlands.
Both Dutch qualifiers had to eliminate teams from their country enroute to earning a Main Draw berth. Before upsetting a team from Canada for their spot in the "money" rounds, de Vries and Keizer scored a 27-25, 18-21 and 15-13 elimination win in 62 minutes over Dutch rivals and 21st-seeded Cintha Boersma and Marrit Leenstra.
Van Iersel and Wesselink, who have placed third at the last two SWATCH FIVB World Championships for players under the age of 21, upset a higher-seeded team from Spain before eliminating second-seeded compatriots Merel Mooren and Rebekka Kadijk 21-17 and 21-17 in 35 minutes.
With the SWATCH FIVB World Tour returning to Japan next week for another qualifying event for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Teru Saiki and Kusuhara earned a Main Draw berth for the Asian country. Japan was guaranteed a spot in the Main Draw for the Seoul Open entering Wednesday's final qualifying round as Teru Saiki and Kusuhara ousted compatriots and 19th-seeded Hiromi Suzuki and Satoko Urata 21-16 and 21-11. |
