Arecibo, Puerto Rico, August 29, 2010 – Puerto Rico defeated China's National Team in four sets (25-19, 30-28, 22-25, 25-20) for a second straight night to win the final leg of the World League qualifier and claim the last open spot for the 2011 edition of the prestigious championship.
For the first time in its history, the Puerto Rican national team earned the right to compete against the best 15 teams in the world, after earning the last World League berth after beating China in two qualification matches.
Puerto Rico started the match with a more consistent serve and good defensive control. The host team dominated with the effective double whammy provided by spikers Héctor Soto and Víctor Rivera. China never found its rhythm in the entire set and lost by a score of 25-19.
The second set saw numerous serving errors from both teams, but after the first technical timeout, 8-7, Puerto Rico controlled the set with an effective and spread out offense and good blocking on the net. After the second technical timeout, spikers Zhong Weijun and Chen Ping got the Chinese side back in the game after erasing a Puerto Rico's 24-21 advantage. Even though China forced several ties, a serve error by Zhong and out-of-bounds spike by Chen gave Puerto Rico the second set, 30-28, and the historic berth to the 2011 FIVB World League.
Puerto Rico's coach, argentine Carlos Cardona, inserted much of his bench players for the third set, a situation China took advantage of to take the second technical time-out, 16-10. Even though Puerto Rico pushed to close the gap to 24-22, China held on to win the third set, 25-22.
Puerto Rico's bench players, nonetheless, quickly got into a good rhythm with the help of the home crowd and completely dominated China to win the fourth set, 25-20.
Point leaders on the day were Soto with 18 for the victorious Puerto Rican side, while China's Ping Chen scored 17 points. |
