Beijing, China, March 19, 2010 -- Champions Shanghai Dunlop men's team ended their 2009-2010 season brilliantly this week after whitewashing Bayi of the Army in the best of three finals of the Chinese Volleyball Association (CVA) men's league. The Team from Shanghai downed their opponents in straight sets in the home court before edging Bayi 3-2 in the away court, thus taking the champion with an complete 2-0 record.
This is also the seventh league title in succession for the Shanghai team, a splendid successes never seen in the CVA league history.
In the first match, Shanghai rallied from the first set down to take the next three set to defeat the Bayi team 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21) without much difficuties. However, the Shanghai Dunlop team met with strong counterattacks from their rivals in their first away match.
After losing the first set 22-25, Shanghai, led by the captain of the Chinese national team Shen Qiong and Fang Yinchao, the former best opposite of the national team, brought home the second set 25-19 with strong spiking and powerful jump serve.
The six-time champions then won the third set even easier 25-15. But they met trouble in the fourth and a few unforced errors cost their chance and Bayi pulled away to win 25-12, forcing the match into the tiebreaker. The real battle came in the fifth and two sides tied several times, then the Shanghai team jumped to 13-9 lead, only a step further before they win the seventh CVA title.
But the Army team unexpectedly leveled the scores at 13 all with powerful serving. The scores went to 16-16 before more experienced Shanghai finally won the last two points with a beautiful attack and a serving, 18-16. |
