Haikou, China, December 23 -- Chinese beach volleyball players won both the men's and women's curtain-raisers at the 2009 Asian Beach Volleyball Championship here on Wednesday at Haikou, the capital city of China's Hainan Province.
The first-day competition witnessed 10 matches apiece for both men and women players in the round-robin pool stage.
Chinese Xue Chen and Zhang Xi, the women's Olympic bronze medal winners and top-seeded players in the championship, downed Tse Wing Hung and Kong Cheuk Yee of Chinese Hong Kong 21-11 and 21-11 in 29 minutes to the cheers of the audience at the seaside resort of Holiday Beach.
With the absence of Chinese Olympic silver medal winners of Tian Jia and Wang Jie, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi are tipped to win the gold medal to live up to their Olympic glory.
And in the men's field, top-seeded Chinese Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin also savored their first victory of 21-10 and 21-8 in 30 minutes over Wong Pui Lam and Kwok Wing Ho of Chinese Hong Kong.
The other two women's pairs from the hosts also reap their wins as third-seeded Jin Jieqiong and Yue Yuan defeated Luk Teck Eng and Teoh Kwan Kee of Malaysia 21-15 and 21-12 in 31 minutes, and fourth-seeded Zhang Changning and Ji Linjun beat Wong Yuen Mei and Wong Wai Fong of Chinese Hong Kong 21-8 and 21-18 in 29 minutes.
Fifth-seeded Mutsumi Ozaki and Ayumi Kusano of Japan breezed over their Chinese Taipei pair of Kou Nai Han and Chang Hui Min 23-21 and 21-15 in 42 minutes, who earlier beat their Indonesian peers Yokbeth Manisala Kapasiang and Efa Sri Susilowati 21-11 and 21-14 in 32 minutes.
Tse Wing Hung and Kong Cheuk Yee of Chinese Hong Kong also lost their second match to Do Thi Hau and Ngo Vo Thanh Loan of Vietnam 21-16 and 22-20 to end up their journey in the championship as they are ranked third in the pool, wherein only the top two pairs advance from each pool.
The same fate also fell down on Luk Teck Eng and Teoh Kwan Kee of Malaysia who also lost their second match to Truong Thi Yen and Nguyen Thi Mai of Vietnam 17-21, 21-14 and 16-14 in 50 minutes, and Tse Wing Hung and Kong Cheuk Yee of Chinese Hong Kong who lost to Gunasinghe Thakshila and Gunawardana Geethika of Sri Lanka 21-10 and 21-14.
South Korean pair of Jung Ji-Young and Shin Mi-Hwa lost both pool matches to Samalikova Bakhtygul and Pilipenko Marina of Kazakhstan as well as to Beh Shun Thing and Luk Teck Hua of Malaysia, both in straight sets.
The men's sheet also witnessed the exodus of Chinese Hong Kong players Wong Pui Lam and Kwok Wing Ho who suffered their second defeat of the day to Ekanayaka Pubudu and Silva Dhammika of Sri Lanka in straight sets 21-14 and 21-18.
South Korean student players Jang Jae-Pil and Baek Min-Hyeop also had to pack their luggage after losing both pool matches to Alexandr Dyachenko and Alexey Sidorenko of Kazakhstan 21-5 and 21-9, and to Peiris Sampath and Rathnapala Wasantha of Sri Lanka 21-8 and 21-10.
Mohamad Fitri bin Salim and Mohd Faiz Putra bin Abd Razak of Malaysia faced the same fate as they were defeated by Alexey Kulinich and Dmitriy Yakovlev of Kazakhstan 21-14 and 21-18, and by Wong Kwun Pong and Wong Chun Wai of Chinese Hong Kong 22-20 and 25-23.
Chinese Liu Yong and Chen Cheng also won their match against Al-Sheriqi Haitham and Al-Hosni Ahmed of Oman 17-21, 21-17 and 15-13 in 48 minutes, after the Omani players won their first match over Gabriel Ingkagan Usman and Angelo Confesor Espiritu of the Philippines 21-11 and 21-19.
Iran's both pairs all scored their respective victories on the opening day as Jadideh Azim and Sansabali Ebrahim sailed over another Omani pair of Al-Jabri Khalifa and Al-Subahi Bader 21-23, 25-23 and 15-13, and Raoufi Rahman and Assari Naeini Reza defeated Japanese Shinpei Aoki and Yujiro Hidaka 21-13 and 21-18. |
