Stavanger, Norway, June 30, 2009 - Led by teams from Brazil and Germany, the first six men's pool play results at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships were decided here Tuesday with 12 tandems securing spots in Thursday's opening elimination rounds on the Vaagen Harbour dockside courts.
Brazilian winners Tuesday featured top-seeded Alison Cerutti/Harley Marques (Pool A) and Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos (Pool E) while the German efforts was led by third-seeded Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann (Pool C) and 18th-seeded Sebastian Dollinger/Mischa Urbatzka (Pool G) as all four Beach Volleyball tandems posted 3-0 match marks to win their pools outright.
Also capturing pools after tying another team for the pool leadership with 2-1 match marks were 11th-seeded Andy Ces/Kevin Ces of France (Pool K) and 16th-seeded Kristjan Kais/Rivo Vesik of Estonia (Pool I) as the two teams posted wins Tuesday over teams from Norway and Russia.
With six pools being decided Tuesday and the last six group placements being determined Wednesday, the 32-team single-elimination brackets for both men and women will begin Thursday.
The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour leaders with four podium placements, including two gold medals to their credit, Alison and Harley scored a 21-11 and 21-12 win over 24th-seeded Florian Gosch and Alexander Horst of Austria Tuesday morning. Emanuel and Ricardo, the 2003 SWATCH FIVB World Championships, finished Pool E by scoring a 21-16 and 21-14 win in 34 minutes over 20th-seeded Penggen Wu and Rui Yin of China.
Brink and Reckermann finished Pool C with a 21-13 and 21-11 win in 36 minutes over 22nd-seeded Mariano Baracetti and Jose Salema of Argentina while Dollinger and Urbatzka ended their Pool G competition with a 21-18 and 21-19 victory in 43 minutes over seventh-seeded Jialu Li and Linyin Xu of China.
The Ces brothers were handed the Pool K top spot when 14th-seeded Vegard Hoidalen and Jorre Kjemperud forfeited their match to the French as both pairs finished with 2-1 match marks with the head-to-head competition breaking the tie. Kais and Vesik topped ninth-seeded Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky of Russia 18-21, 21-12 and 15-12 in 55 minutes to break the deadlock in Pool I. |
