Stavanger, Norway, June 29, 2009 - Three more women's teams from Beach Volleyball power Brazil netted wins to clinch spots in the opening single-elimination rounds at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships presented by ConocoPhillips as the action here Monday featured the younger players from the South American country.
After the veteran pair of Shelda Bede and Ana Paula Connelly posted their second-straight win Sunday to tie for their pool leadership (E), the Brazilians pairs of Talita Antunes/Maria Antonelli, Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca and the Salgado sisters each improved their pool records to 2-0 with wins Monday.
Second-seeded Talita and Antonelli are sharing the top spot in Pool B with 23rd-seeded Chen Xue and Ying Zhang of China. Both teams will be playing each other for the first-time Wednesday as the Brazilians and Chinese defeated pairs from Russia and the Netherlands, respectively, Monday.
Third-seeded Juliana and Larissa, who captured SWATCH FIVB World Tour stops in Brazil and Japan earlier this year, are the sole leader in Pool C. Juliana and Larissa play 22nd-seeded Hana Klapalova and Tereza Petrova of the Czech Republic for the second-time internationally Wednesday with a previous victory in 2006.
The Salgados share the Pool H leadership with 17th-seeded Liesbeth Mouha/Liesbet Van Breedam of Belgium.
Two others pools remain tied after Monday's competition with 18th-seeded Daniela Gioria and Giulia Momoli of Italy in sole possession of Pool G after defeating a team from Cuba Monday.
In pools D and L, fourth-seeded Nicole Branagh/Elaine Youngs of the United States and the 12th-seeded Austrian Schwaiger sisters (Doris and Stefanie) won their first two pool play matches as expected as both pairs were fifth-place finishers at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. |
