Estonians Claim Men's Semi-final Spot at Jinshan Open

Shanghai, China, May 2, 2009 -- In reaching the men's semi-finals of this week's US$380,000 China Shanghai Jinshan Open, Estonians Kristjan Kais and Rivo Vesik, seeded 10th in the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event at the Beach Volley Venue in the Jinshan District of Shanghai, won four-straight matches, including a 21-16 and 21-14 win in 44 minutes over third-seeded Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany here Saturday to join Brazilians Alison Cerutti and Harley Marques as the only unbeaten teams in the China Shanghai Jinshan Open.

With the men making their fifth appearance in Shanghai, two other teams qualified for the SWATCH FIVB World Tour "final four" after winning elimination matches late Saturday afternoon after Brazilians Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli captured the $30,000 prize for winning the women's gold medal.

Brink and Reckermann rebounded from their setback to the Estonians to scored a 21-17 and 21-14 win in 41 minutes over ninth-seeded qualifiers Benjamin Insfran and Hevaldo Moreira of Brazil to earn a semi-final spot opposite of Alison and Harley, who advanced to the semi-finals with a 21-12 and 21-16 win in 36 minutes over fifth-seeded Jialu Li and Linyin Xu of China.

Like Brink and Reckermann, the Brazilian Pedros (Cunha and Salgado) gained their SWATCH FIVB World Tour "final four" berth by posting three wins over teams from Brazil, Russia and China Saturday after losing Friday afternoon to Kais and Vesik 19-21, 21-14 and 15-11 in 49 minutes.

Salgado, who had won the past two men's China Shanghai Jinshan Open with Harley, and Cunha eliminated eighth-seeded compatriots Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes 21-19, 15-21 and 15-11 in 61 minutes before ousting sixth-seeded Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky of Russia 21-13 and 21-10 in 37 minutes. The Pedros ended Saturday's schedule with a 21-18 and 22-20 win in 44 minutes over Li and Xu.
